It was like introducing a Neanderthal to fire. It is a cloud-based, configurable, productivity-enhancing tool based on the concept of sticky notes.įor me, it quickly became both useful and indispensable. I came upon Cardsmith ( ) earlier this year – referred to it by a colleague to whom I am ever grateful. Consultants and Freelancers have Cardsmith And whereas, campers, home do-it-yourselfers, hikers, cyclists, Boy/Girl Scouts and prepared motorists have a well-known “go-to” tool – the Swiss army knife - there appears to be no indispensable, multi-use productivity tool for the sole proprietor. Rarely, when they start out, does the practitioner of such professions have the financial wherewithal to engage outside experts to help them in all these activities. If, on the other hand, the sole-practitioner has none of those roles to play, or feels none of those behavioral imperatives, then congratulations or condolences are in order - because they must either be retired or deceased. They are: to stay organized, use time and money wisely, get the most important things done first, demonstrate to our clients that we are on top of things, create intellectual property, build a large network of economic decision makers and key referrers, grow our businesses and, of course, forget nothing. Moreover, there are a set of common behavioral imperatives of such professions. At one time or another in the course of a typical year, we need to be client project managers, sales people, published / recognized experts, web content creators, marketers, webinar hosts, writers, inventors and public speakers (to mention just a few hats on the rack). To varying degrees, those of us engaged as consultants or freelance sole-proprietors need to be jacks-of-all-trades.
